1871 25c Round Liberty BG-857 PCGS MS64 California Fractional Gold
This is a beautiful and rare California Fractional Gold piece that has a very interesting history. Issued for one year only in 1871.
Jewelers Reuben N. Hershfield and Noah Mitchell made their California Fractional Gold coins in Leavenworth, Kansas but had most of their production seized in August 1871 by the Secret Service and were arrested violating the Private Coinage Law of 1864. Abruptly ending their California Fractional Gold producing days.
These coins are identified by the H under the Liberty's neck and above the date.
Mintage Unknown but it’s rarity rating is HR 4 meaning it’s thought 76-100 examples may exist in all conditions.
